This circular mirror has a flat, elongated handle. The back decoration is divided into two zones. In the inner zone, on the right, stands a pine tree with the sun above its crown; beneath it sits an immortal with a halo, attended by a servant holding a parasol. On the left are a crane and a tortoise, both facing the immortal. The outer zone features a scrolling vine border.
The tortoise and crane both symbolize longevity, and such motifs often express wishes for long life and blessings.
A similar mirror excavated in Luoyang, Henan, has the inscription Gui He Qi Shou ([A wish for] Tortoise and Crane shared Longevity) cast on its handle. Handled mirrors were popular during the Song dynasty for their practicality and ease of use.
