This snuff bottle was blown from opaque white glass and shaped into a fish, its tail formed by pulling the molten glass at high temperature. The head, fins, and parts of the tail are overlaid with red glass. Details like eyes, gills, and scales are incised over the body. The underside of the belly bears the mark ‘Made in the Qianlong period’.

This piece exemplifies the ‘cased glass’ (overlay) technique recorded in imperial workshop archives, combining cased-glass and cameo-carving craftsmanship.
